I don\u2019t&nbsp;actually&nbsp;shop most of the time \u2014 what I really enjoy is going through the catalogs across sites to see how their imagery has changed, the way they\u2019ve scrambled to assemble post-pandemic fashion trends (an actual thing), and just as a way to escape from the uncertainty that has comfortably pervaded into our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"1b0f\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"scrolling-vs-searching\"><\/span>Scrolling vs Searching<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"5162\">After a few weeks of scrolling, I began searching. It was sparked off by the fact that I\u2019d seen something on a site the previous day while scrolling and wasn\u2019t able to locate it. Apparently not. I decided to search for something fairly straightforward across multiple e-commerce sites \u2014 an animal print blouse, with the expectation that I would see\u2026animal print blouses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"8625\">It didn\u2019t quite play out that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"9c1d\">Additionally, it\u2019s worth mentioning that the sites I checked weren\u2019t small businesses or e-commerce sites that have just started. There were two solid print shirts and one floral print shirt. So near but so far! Amusing? Yes. Accurate? This was the site I ended up spending the most time in \u2014 and almost purchased items too [my bank account would like to take a minute to thank the shipping restrictions that are currently in place because of COVID-19]. <strong><em>This simply comes from a place of trusting that the retailer&nbsp;knows&nbsp;what I\u2019m looking for.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"f4ec\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"the-importance-of-tags\"><\/span>The Importance of Tags<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"5fde\">This exercise made me aware of how impatient I had become as a customer. In a brick-and-mortar store, I am okay with browsing around a bit because there is that thrill of \u2018finding\u2019 something that you love. But searching online for a very specific product makes me ruthless with my buying choices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"5fde\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"i-do-not-want-to-waste-time-on-sites-that-dont-get-me\"><\/span>I do not want to waste time on sites that don\u2019t&nbsp;<strong><em>get me.<\/em><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A lot of this has to do with the boring and un-sexy backend job of retailers tagging their catalogs. They have got to be both accurate and comprehensive. This can be time-consuming but if you want your impatient customers (aka everyone) to stay on your site, they have got to be on point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"e844\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"why-not-take-the-ai-route\"><\/span>Why Not Take The AI Route?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"a3cb\">All of the sites I searched for the purpose of this experiment were large, multibrand retailers who dealt with big catalogs. And three out of the four sites I shopped in displayed had irrelevant search results ranging from glaringly obvious to somewhat confused. <strong>This is possible because of the human errors that occur during the process of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vue.ai\/industries\/ai-in-ecommerce\/\">catalog management<\/a>, which is expected when it comes to dealing with catalogs of this size.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"641\" height=\"371\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vue.ai\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/1_bOqUnZ5oi4VU04gzgafP0w.png\" alt=\"What automated product tagging looks like\" class=\"wp-image-13067\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vue.ai\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/1_bOqUnZ5oi4VU04gzgafP0w.png 641w, https:\/\/www.vue.ai\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/1_bOqUnZ5oi4VU04gzgafP0w-300x174.png 300w, https:\/\/www.vue.ai\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/1_bOqUnZ5oi4VU04gzgafP0w-150x87.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 641px) 100vw, 641px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.voguebusiness.com\/technology\/taxonomy-is-the-new-fashion-tech-essential-the-yes\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vogue Business had recently published an article that talked about how retailers are investing in technology to fix their taxonomy&nbsp;<\/a>\u2014 the science of naming things- to ensure that their customers have not only the best <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vue.ai\/products\/ai-powered-personalized-search\/\">personalized search<\/a> experience but to also help retailers make<strong>&nbsp;meaningful connections between the products that their customers are browsing<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This, in turn, helps retailers provide recommendations that understand their customer\u2019s intent.
